PITTSBURGH -- The Cincinnati Reds picked the wrong time to run into a hot pitcher.Ivan Nova pitched a six-hitter to stay unbeaten with Pittsburgh and Jung Ho Kang hit a two-run double to key a three-run first inning as the Pirates defeated Cincinnati 4-1 on Thursday night, extending the Reds losing streak to five games.Nova (12-6) pitched his second complete game in seven starts since being acquired from the New York Yankees in a trade on Aug. 1. He struck out four, walked none, got 15 of his outs on ground balls and retired the first 12 batters while throwing 94 pitches.Nova improved to 5-0 with a 2.53 ERA in seven starts with the Pirates. He has issued just two walks in 46 2/3 innings. He didnt give us much to get excited about, Reds manager Bryan Price said. He did a really nice job, even during the few times we had runners on base. He gets so many ground balls, hes always a pitch away from getting out of a tough situation with a double play. When we did have some guys on, he was just able to manage the game extremely well.Nova finished off the Reds in 2 hours, 28 minutes.I think my wife and everybody likes it when I get home early, so I try to make it as quick as possible, Nova said with a grin.Kangs double opened the scoring and he came home on a single by Francisco Cervelli as the Pirates took an early 3-0 lead against Dan Straily (11-8).Kang is 7 for 13 with seven RBI in four games since being activated from the disabled list Monday after missing 15 days with a sore left shoulder. That was all the runs Straily gave up during a five-inning stint. He allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked three.I wasnt exactly where I wanted to be -- but they had three hits (in the first) inning that were probably a foot away from a glove. Total, Straily said. So thats just kind of the way it happened. The Reds dropped to 57-82, clinching their third consecutive losing season and 14th in the last 17 years. The Pirates, still on the fringe of the National League wild card race, won their second straight following an eight-game losing streak. They began a stretch of 15 consecutive games against teams with losing records.Clint Hurdle, in his sixth season, became the sixth manager in Pirates history to win 500 games.Josh Harrison hit two doubles for the Pirates. David Freese and Cervelli had two hits each.Zack Cozart singled in the Reds lone run in the sixth. Andrew McCutchen countered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.TRAINERS ROOMReds: CF Billy Hamilton (strained oblique) missed his fourth straight game with a strained oblique and stayed behind in Cincinnati to receive treatment. . Art Monk Youth Jersey . It is a cliché dragged out by fans and pundits regularly when discussions take place around which teams are better than others. Melbourne NRL coach Craig Bellamy says criticism of his teams ruck tactics by North Queensland coach Paul Green is a ploy to gain an advantage in their qualifying final. On the eve of their playoff at AAMI Park, Green said the ruck interpretation from referees Ben Cummins and Grant Atkins was his biggest concern in Saturday nights showdown at AAMI Park. The Storm have long been accused of using wrestling tactics to slow down the ruck so they can set their defence and Green says he wants his team to be afforded the same latitude. But Bellamy said Green had no issue with their ruck play in their two meetings this season and the Cowboys coach raised the matter as a predictable way to get a benefit from the whistleblowers. The Storm mentor said the officials had had no issue with Melbournes actions throughout the season.Paul came into the press conference and made a statement; it was a very pre-conceived message from him which is all very predictable at this time of year, Bellamy said.We havent changed anything in five or six weeks (since we last played them); we havent changed anything in 24 weeks so hes just trying to get an advantage there from the referees. But Im sure the referee is just going to go out there and do their job.Bellamy questioned whether Greens comments were acceptable given the NRL rules that coaches werent allowed to criticise referees in media conferences. That sounds like criticism to me, he said.Their last meeting att AAMI Park was last years preliminary final, which the Cowboys won convincingly en route to their maiden NRL title.ddddddddddddBellamy admitted the loss had been a turning point for the Storm and made him reassess the team and their game plan. There were things we got out of that game we saw we had to change and improve. It was a circumstance you come across in your career when you realise you have got to change and that was a nudge to say the line we were travelling on needed to change. With so many new faces in the Storm line-up, he said the team didnt carry any scars from the preliminary final loss, or take too much out of their two wins this season over North Queensland.Last year was hugely disappointing but that doesnt come into our reckoning this week, he said.Bellamy hinted there might be some late changes, which could include hulking prop Nelson Asofa- Solomona who missed their last-round regular-season clash through suspension.STORM v COWBOYS - KEY MATCH STATS:* The Storm and Cowboys have met twice previously in finals, with the Cowboys winning on both occasions (2005, 2015)* This is the sixth straight season both teams have made the finals, with each winning one title in that period - Melbourne in 2012 and North Queensland last season* The Cowboys have never won two matches in a row at AAMI Park ' ' '
